Many features can be built into new homes that allow owners to live comfortably and safely in their homes throughout all stages of life.  This page includes a sample floor plan (below) that incorporates many Universal Design features, as well as a list of builders in the Kansas City area that are certified to build homes designed for aging in place.

This is an example of a home designed for use by anyone at any stage of life.  Features include:

·        Home is all on one level

·        Stepless front entry

·        36” doorways with lever handles throughout

·        Adequate wheelchair turning radius throughout

·        Level thresholds throughout

·        Fully accessible kitchen cabinets and appliances

·        All features outlined in the accessibility checklists in a previous section of this book can be built-in from the start

A multi level home can be made fully accessible with the addition of an elevator.
