July 30-Aug. 16: David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross performed by the KC Actors Theatre, H&R Block City Stage at Union Station.  For details:  http://www.kcactors.org 

Sept. 14: Submission deadline for entrants in the Plays-in-Progress Workshop Contest.  To enter, send a copy of your MS (35-110 pages in length) to Dr. Charles Kovich, English Department, Rockhurst University, 1100 Rockhurst Road, Kansas City, MO  64110.  The Workshop was created to give playwrights an opportunity to witness a reading of their play.  The winning play will be performed on Oct. 28 (see below), and its playwright will receive a $250 prize. 

Sept. 22: Joseph O'Neill, author of the PEN/Faulkner Award-winning novel Neverland, appears at 6:30 at the Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Oct. 1-4:  Rockhurst University Theatre presents The Laramie Project by Moisés Kauffman and the Tectonic Theatre Project. General admission $8.  Oct. 1 & 2 @ 8 pm; Oct. 3 & 4 at 2 pm.  Mabee Theatre.  

Oct. 20: Michael Chabon, award-winning author of novels such as The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay and The Yiddish Policemen’s Union, will read at Unity Temple on the Plaza in a Rainy Day Books series event.  7 pm.  Contact Rainy Day Books (913-384-3126) for tickets and further event details. 

Oct. 22: Rockhurst’s Midwest Poets Series features a reading by Robert Pinsky, former poet laureate of the United States (1997-2000).  Reception begins at 6 pm; reading at 7 pm.  (Location TBA) Admission to Midwest Poets Series is $3.  No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Oct. 28: Plays-in-Progress Workshop.  (New works presented in concert readings.)  Sedgwick Hall, Room 115 @ 7:30 pm. 

Oct. 30-Nov. 8: Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia at Spencer Theatre, UMKC Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry.  Adults $15, students $6.  Nov. 8 at 2 pm; all other dates at 7:30 pm.  For tickets and further info:  (816) 235-6222

Nov. 12-15: Rockhurst University Theatre presents Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.  General admission $10.  Nov. 12 & 13 @ 8 pm; Oct. 14 & 15 at 2 pm.  Mabee Theatre.

Nov. 17: Chris Abani, author of this year’s Sigma Tau Delta Common Reader, will appear at the University of Kansas in the Woodruff Auditorium of the Kansas Union at 7:30 pm.  For further details, contact KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities (785-864-4798). 

Jan. 15: Deadline for submissions to The Rockhurst Review.  Send original, unpublished poems, essays, short fiction, drama, and artwork to The Rockhurst Review, Dr. Patricia Cleary Miller, English Department, Rockhurst University, 1100 Rockhurst Road, Kansas City, MO  64110.  Manuscripts will not be returned.  For further details about guidelines, contact Dr. Miller

Feb. 1: Deadline for submissions to Infectus, Rockhurst’s student journal of the literary and visual arts.  For further details, contact Lindsey Griffith or Dr. John Kerrigan. 

Feb. 22-23: Rockhurst University Theatre presents Theatreworks.  Mabee Theater.  8 pm.  Free.
